Alumnus Peter Davidson (BEc ’54) has decided to give $5 million to the University of Sydney to establish scholarships at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Sydney Medical School. The gift will also be used to support research and children’s health programs within Sydney Medical School.
Mr Davidson’s gift will also contribute towards the University’s newly launched INSPIRED fundraising Campaign, which aims to raise $600 million from more than 40,000 donors.
Tim Dolan, Director of Development at the University of Sydney said: “We are honoured each time an alumnus chooses the University as the recipient of their valuable gift. It is recognition of the international standing and reputation of the University of Sydney.
“Philanthropy such as Mr Davidson’s plays an important role in helping us maintain our standing in the premier league of universities. It gives us the competitive edge, ensuring we can attract the brightest minds.
“In this case, it will also allow those minds to improve children’s health and support development in the arts.”
Mr Davidson, who has been a member of the University of Sydney’s Challis Bequest Society for a number of years, decided to change the timing of his gift so that his investment could start to make a positive difference in the lives of others sooner.
Mr Davidson said: “This gift has enabled me to contribute to the diverse causes I care so much about. It is a special feeling knowing that I have played a part in championing the people who are able to change the course for someone who is facing significant obstacles.”
Having contracted polio as a child, Mr Davidson feels particularly passionate about supporting initiatives such as the Sydney Medical School’s ChIPS program (Chronic Illness Peer Support) at the Children’s Hospital Westmead, which helps young people manage the challenges of living with a chronic illness. Mr Davidson has also established a fund in memory of his wife, Suzanne, who passed away from cancer in 2008, which will support scholarships and research programs in the Sydney Medical School.
In recognition of Mr Davidson’s love of music, he has also chosen to direct funds towards establishing The Peter Davidson postgraduate scholarship at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This scholarship will inspire talented musicians and researchers to develop their skills further in a world-class academic and performance environment.
